The short answer
Short answer: sometimes, for some foods, in small studies. When one enzyme was matched to one kind of meal, controlled studies found less gas: alpha-galactosidase taken with a bean meal lowered breath hydrogen and how bad gas felt in 8 healthy volunteers. In a 19-person study with a chili meal, it cut gas but bloating did not differ. A review of multi-enzyme products says longer, better-designed studies are still needed.
Questions readers ask
This page exists because people keep asking some version of these, in public, in the last 30 days. None of them is a review of a product.

What studies tested
Two published trials sit behind most answers to this question, plus one review. Each tested something narrow.
| Study | Enzyme and design | People and dose | Test meal | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Di Stefano2007 | Alpha-galactosidase. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled. | 8 healthy volunteers. 300 or 1,200 GalU. | 420 g of cooked beans | At 1,200 GalU, less breath hydrogen and less severe gas over 8 hours. Both doses lowered the total symptom score. |
| Ganiats1994 | Alpha-galactosidase drops. Randomized, double-blind crossover, one week apart. | 19 people. 8 drops. | Meatless chili | Fewer gas events per hour over 6 hours. No difference in bloating or pain. |
A lactase study is not covered on this page.
None of these studies tested a Physician's Choice product. Both single-enzyme studies paired alpha-galactosidase with one kind of meal. They do not tell you what an enzyme does with other foods. What is still unknown
- Whether results hold over time. The 2018 review says long-term studies with validated scoring systems and factorial designs are needed.
- Which enzyme in a blend does what.No trial in that review was designed to link a symptom to one component of the mix.
- Whether a small study applies to you.8 and 19 people are small groups, and the bean study enrolled healthy volunteers. An enzyme trial also assumes food is the trigger; for the other common causes, from swallowed air to hormone shifts, see what causes bloating. Whether a food is your trigger is what a food diary for bloating can show.
- Gas and bloating are not the same result. The chili study found less gas but no change in bloating. For products sold for bloating itself, and what each label is allowed to say, see over-the-counter bloating relief.
- How a label dose compares with a study dose.Studies report activity units, such as GalU. Many labels, including Digestive Enzymes, list only the blend weight in mg.
What is in Digestive Enzymes

Common follow-up questions
Will an enzyme end bloating after every meal?
The studies above do not show that. One found less gas with no change in bloating. Results depended on the enzyme and the meal.
How is Digestive Enzymes taken?
The label says 1 capsule with the largest meal. Some people take an extra one with heavy meals, and most do not take more than 2 a day.
Are digestive enzymes safe to take every day?
That is its own question, answered in digestive enzymes side effects: are they safe to take every day? If you plan to take enzymes daily for a long time, ask your doctor first.
